Two-year waiting list for care of sleeping disorder
Friday
July 23rd 2004
THE waiting list for suffers of a life-threatening sleeping disorder at one
of the two clinics that treat it is more than two years long.
Respiratory consultant and physician Professor Walter McNicholas, who works
at the clinic in St Vincent's Hospital, Dublin, told an Oireachtas committee
yesterday that the situation was now urgent.
Prof McNicholas, who is currently president of the
European Respiratory
Society, described as "rudimentary" the treatments currently available in
this country for Sleep Apnoea - a respiratory-related disorder that stops a
person breathing while they sleep. He insisted there was a need for more
resources and qualified technicians to work in the clinic if the service was to
improve.
"The death rate from Sleep Apnoea is eight times higher if it remains
untreated. It's quite urgent we address the situation if we are to get the sleep
service off the ground," he told members of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on
Health.
Prof McNicholas added studies in England showed that up to 25pc of road
accidents were related to Sleep Apnoea. He also revealed that he had stopped
doing media interviews because the huge numbers of phone calls he subsequently
received from people looking for treatment, which he cannot give. Prof
McNicholas was one of a group of respiratory doctors attending the committee to
highlight the need for a national strategic approach to respiratory disease.
The group said that although Ireland has the highest death rate from the
disease in Europe, we have one of the lowest rates of physician consultations
from those who suffer from the illness.
