When breathing stops the levels of oxygen in the blood begin to drop. After a short time the lack of oxygen causes a reflex response. This response forces open the airway with a loud snort, maybe gasping breaths and loud snoring. There may also be kicking and flailing of the arms. There are three different types of sleep apnoea:
